1011024 NCKU launches news channel with student anchor team
Tainan, Taiwan, Oct. 22, 2012
NCKU TV, the news channel established by the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, was launched by NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung on October 15.
Presenting a team of energetic, young student news anchors, Hwung said the launch of NCKU TV represents the beginning of a new era in university news service in Taiwan.
Speaking to the media during the press conference announcing the launch, Hwung noted that the NCKU News Center will be serving as a communication platform between the university and the local community.
The news channel benefits NCKU graduates who are entering the job market, as well as the public who will get a better understanding of the university through the help of the university’s news center.
According to Hwung, the NCKU News Center performed at full throttle when one of his predecessors, former NCKU President Dr. Jin Wu, was in office. Wu was full of refreshing new ideas and his close relationship with the media in Taiwan helped elevate the reputation of the university, Hwung said.
Humorously, Hwung made an interesting comparison between the media and boy-girl relationships. “A boy needs to market himself to attract girls,” he said.
NCKU News Center shoulders the responsibility of broadcasting the university’s academic ideas and research achievements to the public, with the hope that NCKU graduates will not only be favorable for corporate firms, but also draw attention from corporate leaders.
Dr. Alex Tang, director of NCKU News Center, said, “This is all about the students. The opportunity and experience that they are getting from working with NCKU News Center is something that they cannot find in the classroom.” This experience will certainly enhance their character and personality as media professionals, according to Tang.
Anita Hsu is one of the up and coming student news anchors who was at the conference. "It was nice to hear the encouraging words from the president. I was really surprised to see so many people supporting the event. It was truly an honor to be part of it."
Hsu made her first news clip that was shown to the audience; however, she is setting her ambitions much higher. “I think that there has always been many good research projects going on in NCKU, but there has not been a lot of coverage of them. If I get a chance to promote their achievements, it will be great for the university.”
NCKU News is quickly developing, and it is expecting to expand in many directions. This semester it recruited its first international students to the team. Kelvin Lye and Jonathan Manson from the Institute of International Management (IMBA) will be bringing an international tint to NCKU News.
Recently NCKU has had an influx of international students on campus. This trend is expected to continue in the future, especially with the growing economic strength in Asia. Being able to reach out to these international scholars helps further improve the university community.
Established in 1988, the NCKU News Center has been playing the role of promoting campus news and public relations for the university, reporting about the outstanding achievements of students and research staff to the public.
With years of continuous effort, the news center has managed to set up a complete news network with reports in Chinese, English as well as in video.
Clearly, NCKU News is going to be a louder voice as fall semester kicked off. Students will be better informed about events happening on campus, as well as breakthrough research achievements in all departments across the university. Likewise, the local Tainan community will be informed about what good things are happening in and around NCKU.
