1010920 A new year begins: NCKU President Hwung welcomes new students
Tainan, Taiwan, 17th September 2012
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Tainan, held its 2012 Freshmen Orientation Camp on September 15th in Jhong-Jheng Hall, Kuang-Fu Campus, NCKU, with NCUK President Hwung-Hweng Hwung joining more than 2,800 new students to celebrate the beginning of their new chapter of life.
Attending a university is one of the biggest turning points in life. How does a freshman prepare for university life? President Hwung ignited the students’ hearts and minds with this message -- learn independently, form good habits and cultivate high EQ.
He emphasized the importance of EQ by saying that getting good grades doesn’t guarantee a successful life but good interaction with others is a necessary element for success in life.
Hwung welcomed the new members to the big family of NCKU and encouraged them to obtain success through happy learning and forming healthy attitudes in the next four years at NCKU.
“From the very first day of entering NCKU, you have to stick to what you’re doing no matter whether things turn out to be successful or not,” added the school leader.
He advised the freshmen to start a more independent life by telling their parents, “From now on, you may spare your care for later and stop tucking money into my pocket secretly assuming that I can’t take care of myself.” The insightful observation resonated with the freshmen, arousing applause and laughter from the audience.
“Care about others and extend the caring to the affairs around you. By doing so, the world will be a better place to live in,” explained Hwung to the students about the importance of civic duties that should be undertaken by intellectuals.
Breaking the traditional idea of “never confront the elders,” Hwung advised the students to dare to say no. He said not all that the elders say are correct; “to go beyond the convention and excel in what you do, you have to learn to say no to the false and question it.
He also stressed, “To make good use of the four years, students have to kick bad habits like staying up late or surfing the Internet till midnight and cultivate diligence and thrifty habits instead.”
A seed-planting ceremony was then held to signify planting the seed of dream to the fertile soil of NCKU, hoping that every seed here will grow into a banyan tree to pass down the genuine spirit of NCKU.
2012 NCKU Orientation Camp includes the general introduction of NCKU, student forums lead by renowned scholars and outstanding graduates, school song singing, student association introduction and a campus tour.
In addition, a welcoming party arranged by the seniors had impressed the new members of the big family with warmth and enthusiasm.
