1010828 NCKU hosts 2012 iCities to promote international urban planning education

The opening ceremony of the 2012 iCities: International Forum on Innovative Planning Education and Studio Exhibition was held on August 20th at the Chu-Hwa Hall of the Magic School of Green Technologies, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, where 25 scholars of renowned planning institutes from 6 countries, including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the United States, Japan, Thailand, China, marking the event as the first international planning studio exhibition in Taiwan.
NCKU Executive Vice President Huey-Jen Jenny Su, on behalf of President Hwung-Hweng Hwung, welcomed the foreign delegates, she said, in response to global climate change and globalization, development, planning and design experts must learn from past experience and look to the future.
NCKU hosts the event with innovative thinking, expecting to provide a new platform for international exchanges regarding the issues of urban planning under different geographic and cultural context, according to V.P. Su.
With the invitation from IFoU (International Forum on Urbanism), NCKU College of Design and Planning hosts the event to strengthen knowledge exchange on urban design, planning, and management among countries, according to Professor Feng-Tyan Lin, Dean of College of Design and Planning at NCKU.
On elaborating the meaning of the name of the event, “iCities,” Dean Lin said that the Chinese pronunciation of iCities as 愛 meaning “love” makes the event as “love city” （愛城市）and the “i” may stand for “innovative, integrative, international” and “to inspire the imagination” as well.
Studio projects have been the core of professional training worldwide, nevertheless, there has been little chance for students to share their studio works with others, according to Ko-Wan Tsou, Chair of Department of Urban Planning, NCKU, adding that iCities provides a platform for students to present and share their creative planning ideas to international audiences.
Chair Tsou pointed out that 8 universities from the world are involved in this grand event hosted by NCKU including Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, Harbin Institute of Technology, China, Rajamangala University of Technology Isan, Thailand, Tokyo University, Japan, University of California, Berkeley, USA, University of Manchester, UK, University of the West of England, UK, and University of Washington, USA.
The event provides a venue for scholars and students to exchange thoughts, according to Professor Janet Askew from University of the West of England, and it is especially important for students to learn from each other developing innovative ideas.
Aside from the forum on planning education, a poster exhibition showcasing a total of 64 student projects from 8 countries and 17 renowned planning institutes has displayed 6 aspects in contemporary urban planning, namely, Connecting cities, Agricultural cities, Expanding cities, Project cities, Revisioning cities, and Sustainable cities.
